Winter (August-September)

Djilba / Winter activities

Djilba is the season of in-between. Winter hasn’t quite let go, but spring is already pushing through, cold mornings giving way to warmer, longer days. The bush can’t seem to decide, and that’s the point.

Wildflowers begin their quiet takeover. Wattles are in full gold by now, and the first orchids start appearing low in the understory if you know where to look. It’s a season of beginnings, new life stirring, the land waking up in stages rather than all at once.

The weather swings between the two seasons it sits inside. A clear, still morning can turn to sudden rain by afternoon, then clear again by evening. It keeps you on your toes, but there’s a lightness to it too, the first real sense that the cold is loosening its grip.

In Noongar understanding, Djilba is a season of conception, new growth stirring beneath the surface before it’s visible above it. A reminder that beginnings are rarely clean or immediate. Most things start quietly, in the overlap, before they’re ready to be seen.

My husband and I had the most magical weekend away in the Heyscape Toodyay Cabin - Jack. We were perched in an off grid tiny cabin on a sheep farm with access to a fire pit and out door bath. DREAMY! The cabin had everything we needed from tea and coffee to board games. We had the most amazing time. Toodyay was the quaintest little town to explore as well. We stayed at Heyscape Denmark and found the peaceful surroundings and glorious green pastures very relaxing . The Dam restaurant was just a stone throw away but was closed on both Sunday and Monday so something to bear in mind when booking accommodation but it was not an issue as there were many other alternatives nearby. The weather was perfect, a mix of sunshine and the occasional drizzle, the Rainbow Coast at its finest. We recommend the Denmark Heyscapes cabins as  a lovely escape, true peace and quiet. We had a wonderful stay at Heyscape in Denmark (Ginger cabin). The cabin had everything we could have needed. It was super cosy. We loved that the accomodation was pet friendly, Max had a great time keeping an eye on the cows. Everything was clean and well appointed. We stayed in Edith in Busselton. Very easy to find, even in the dark. It was a lovely weekend opportunity to reconnect with my husband after a very busy start to the year. The cabin was very warm and well appointed. Waking up to the beautiful full windowed wall was a delight. The outdoor bath was definitely our favourite part of our stay. The bath stayed hot for hours and it was so relaxing to enjoy the wine purchased from the Cellar Door at Whicher Ridge while watching the wildlife hop and flitter by. Such a beautiful, peaceful stay in Denmark. Waking up to kangaroos grazing and ocean views right from bed felt pretty special and made it hard to leave. The space itself is stunning — thoughtfully styled and super cosy. Every little detail has been considered, and it had everything we needed (and more). The outdoor bath is incredible and such a nice touch, along with the sauna and BBQ which make it feel extra special. There’s also a covered outdoor area that was ideal for sitting back and watching the rain — so relaxing.
